Mastercard is bringing its fraud detection capabilities to stablecoin transactions, launching a tool that allows financial institutions to screen dollar-pegged token payments before the money moves on-chain.
The product, called Stablecoin Security, was announced at the Money20/20 conference in Las Vegas. Mastercard said it applies the company’s existing risk management systems to digital dollar tokens, enabling institutions to scan payments for fraud, scams and sanctions exposure.
Pre-transaction screening
According to Mastercard, financial institutions will be able to review transactions in advance, helping to block problematic activity at the source. The company said the tool combines payment and blockchain insights to give institutions a clearer view of risk.
“Stablecoins are creating new possibilities for value exchange, but financial institutions need the right intelligence and controls to participate with confidence,” said Ann Johnson, executive vice president, Security Solutions at Mastercard. “By bringing payment and blockchain insights together, Stablecoin Security extends Mastercard’s fraud and risk capabilities to digital asset payments, giving institutions a clearer view of risk to make more informed decisions and build greater trust.”
Complex transfer patterns cited
In promoting the need for the product, Mastercard cited a recent study that examined 593 million stablecoin transfer events across 141 million Ethereum transactions in 2025. The study found that nearly 60% were complex, multi-step transactions rather than simple, one-to-one payments.
The launch highlights how traditional payment companies are adapting their security infrastructure to blockchain-based payment rails, with a focus on proactive screening to maintain trust and compliance in stablecoin flows.
