Meme coins have faced over $1.4 billion in cumulative selling pressure on Binance since Bitcoin reached its October peak, according to CryptoQuant. The sector has declined significantly as broader market uncertainty prompted investors to reduce exposure to riskier crypto assets.
Bitcoin's maximum drawdown from its October high reached 54%, with the asset now trading approximately 35% below that peak. Meme coins have suffered steeper losses due to their dependence on online trends and community sentiment rather than underlying fundamentals. Their share of total altcoin market capitalization has dropped to below 3%, marking the lowest level on record and indicating a sharp loss of liquidity across the sector.
CryptoQuant noted that the decline reflects massive selling pressure on the riskiest segment of the crypto ecosystem, and that meme coins suffer the most in every correction, with exposure to them carrying a very high risk of capital loss.
Notable Declines Across Major Meme Tokens
Dogecoin and Shiba Inu both fell approximately 9% amid market uncertainty. dogwifhat declined more than 10% over the past week, while Official Trump slid over 12%. BONK and FLOKI experienced steeper losses, each falling more than 15% during the same period. MemeCore recorded the largest weekly decline among tracked tokens at over 19%.
Hunter Biden's LAPTOP, which launched on Coinbase's Base network in September, exemplifies the volatility in the sector. The token experienced a severe crash after its initial launch, losing 98% of its value.
Market Challenges and Trading Dynamics
The mounting pressure on meme coins has drawn criticism from market participants regarding trading practices within the sector. Some observers have attributed declining performance to rapid trading cycles, with traders holding tokens for only seconds before selling. This behavior, they argue, prevents projects from building sustained momentum and real community support.
Even tokens backed by genuine communities have struggled to gain traction as persistent selling pressure pushes prices lower. Bundled token launches offer limited reassurance, as insiders can sell their holdings and leave other investors exposed to significant losses.
