MetaMask Adds Limit Orders for Token Swaps in Self-Custodial Wallet

MetaMask has introduced limit orders for token swaps in its mobile app, allowing users to set a target price and leave the order open until the market reaches it. The feature went live on or around November 5, 2026.

The addition marks a shift for a wallet that has largely asked users to accept prevailing market prices on swaps.

How the orders work

MetaMask supports two basic setups: sell orders placed above the current market price and buy orders placed below it. The company describes use cases including take-profit orders, where a trader locks in gains if a token climbs to a set level, and below-market buy orders for users hoping to buy a token on a dip.

Open orders can be tracked and managed inside the app, without switching to a separate trading dashboard.

The feature requires MetaMask Mobile version 8.18.0 or later. At launch it covers four networks:

  • Ethereum
  • Base
  • BNB Smart Chain
  • Robinhood Chain

The self-custody difference

Limit orders are standard on centralized exchanges, but those platforms hold user assets while an order waits. MetaMask aims to avoid that step by relying on revocable ERC-7702 delegation to execute orders conditionally. Users grant a narrow, conditional permission rather than handing over their tokens, and assets stay in the user's own wallet until an order fills. The permission can be revoked.

According to the research findings, this is the first limit order feature of its kind integrated into a self-custodial wallet.

Fees and gas

Execution is gasless from the user's perspective. Rather than holding a separate balance of a network's native token for gas, users have transaction fees deducted from the tokens being sold.

MetaMask's service fee is charged only when an order is fulfilled. An order that never reaches its target price incurs no service fees.

From swaps to a broader toolkit

MetaMask launched its Swaps feature in 2020 as an aggregator that pulled quotes from multiple sources so users could trade tokens without leaving the wallet. Since then the company has added more advanced tools, including perpetual trading enhancements and rewards programs, according to the research.

Limit orders are integrated into the same Swap aggregator. MetaMask's user base reportedly surpassed 100 million in early 2026.
