Metaplanet Moves 3,000 Bitcoin to Coinbase Prime in August Custody Shuffle

Metaplanet, Japan's most prominent corporate Bitcoin holder, transferred 3,000 BTC to Coinbase Prime on August 29, valued at roughly $237 million. The move marks the latest in a series of substantial Bitcoin transfers throughout August, with over 2,350 BTC sent to Coinbase Prime during the month.

The company maintains a position of 43,000 BTC acquired at an average cost basis of $96,191 per coin, representing approximately $4.09 billion in accumulated value. This positions Metaplanet among the world's largest corporate Bitcoin treasuries.

August Transfer Activity

The August 29 transfer followed two earlier movements to Coinbase Prime: 1,000 BTC on August 25 valued at approximately $79.77 million, and 1,350 BTC three days later worth around $108 million. An even larger movement of 5,000 BTC occurred on August 12, which CEO Simon Gerovich characterized as a custodial adjustment rather than a sale.

Market Response and Holdings

Bitcoin's price remained relatively stable throughout the transfer period, trading between $77,800 and $79,800. Metaplanet has reported no reduction in its total Bitcoin holdings, with Gerovich consistently describing the transfers as operational rather than strategic disposals.

Strategic Context

The custody movements occur within a broader strategic initiative involving Super League, also referred to as Superplanet. The company is pursuing potential access to US capital markets through shareholder approvals expected in Q4 2026, which could involve an injection of 2,100 BTC.

Metaplanet's strategy mirrors that of other major Bitcoin accumulators, using Bitcoin as a treasury reserve asset. Currently, the company's aggregate position trades underwater, with Bitcoin prices at $77,800 to $79,800 compared to the average acquisition cost of $96,191 per coin.
