Metaplanet Transfers $186 Million in Bitcoin to Coinbase Prime in Latest Custody Move

Metaplanet moved 2,400 BTC, valued at approximately $186 million, into Coinbase Prime custody within a three-hour window on August 31. The transfer was broken into six separate deposits ranging from 103 BTC to 800 BTC, with the largest single transaction worth roughly $62 million occurring about 30 minutes before the remaining deposits followed in quick succession.

This transfer represents the third major deposit to Coinbase Prime in less than a week. On August 25, the Tokyo-listed bitcoin treasury firm moved 1,000 BTC worth approximately $79.77 million into the exchange. Three days later, on August 28, it sent an additional 1,350 BTC valued at roughly $108 million. Combined with the August 31 transfer, Metaplanet has deposited at least 4,750 BTC, worth approximately $374 million, into Coinbase Prime custody since August 25.

Despite the substantial transfers, Metaplanet's reported bitcoin holdings remain unchanged at 43,000 BTC, currently worth approximately $3.48 billion with an average acquisition cost of roughly $96,191 per coin. Chief executive Simon Gerovich stated that the ongoing transfers are custodial in nature and do not signal any intention to liquidate.

Coinbase Prime provides regulated custody, over-the-counter execution, and collateral services alongside standard exchange access. None of Metaplanet's recent deposits have been accompanied by confirmed reductions in its reported holdings.

The timing of these deposits coincides with Metaplanet's proposed contribution of 2,100 BTC and $2.5 million in cash to Superplanet, a new U.S.-based, Nasdaq-listed bitcoin treasury platform developed in partnership with Super League Enterprises. This venture requires a Super League shareholder vote targeted for the fourth quarter of 2026, along with Nasdaq filings and regulatory approval in both the United States and Japan.
