Mexican prosecutors allege that two men targeted the home of Camilo Séptimo keyboardist Jonathan Meléndez in search of a cold wallet they believed contained millions of dollars in Bitcoin, leading to the deaths of the musician and three others.
According to authorities, the victims found dead at the family's home in Atizapán de Zaragoza on September 1 included Meléndez, his pregnant wife Ana Paula Barragán, their three-year-old daughter Sofía, and domestic worker Aleyda Romero. The couple's six-year-old son survived the incident.
State prosecutors state that the suspects entered the home looking for a cold wallet believed to hold substantial amounts of cryptocurrency. Authorities identified the suspects as Diego Sebastián and Gerardo, utilizing initialed surnames per Mexican privacy regulations.
According to the investigation, Diego Sebastián was a business associate of Meléndez who allegedly leveraged their relationship to gain access to the property. He reportedly offered Gerardo 2 million pesos, approximately $118,000, to help acquire the digital assets. Both suspects were arrested on September 2.
Cold wallets, or hardware wallets, store the private keys required to control access to cryptocurrency funds. While these devices provide strong protection against online security threats, they remain vulnerable to physical targeting and extortion attempts.
The incident highlights a broader trend of physical security threats facing cryptocurrency holders. Blockchain analytics firm Chainalysis documented 46 violent crypto attacks resulting in over $30 million stolen during the first half of 2026, with home invasions accounting for 37% of those documented incidents.
