Michael Burry Warns of a Stock Market ‘Supervolcano’

Investor Michael Burry, known for betting against the 2008 housing bubble, has warned that the next stock market bear market may last for an extended period. His warning is based on a century of inflation-adjusted S&P 500 data.

Although the S&P 500 closed at a record high on October 6, Burry argues that fewer stocks are now carrying the index higher. He compares the current market to a supervolcano caldera, where the surface appears calm while pressure builds underneath. According to Burry, this same hidden buildup preceded each of the ten market tops over the past 40 years.

In a Substack post, Burry noted that the October 6 high featured light trading volume and followed similar highs in June and August 2026 that resulted in only brief pauses. His analysis tracks market breadth, showing that fewer stocks are participating in rallies—an argument also raised by gold advocate Peter Schiff.

Burry's thesis also points to returning inflation, stretched valuations, and high levels of speculation. Earlier in the month, he stated that investors had entered a denial stage similar to the conditions seen in 2000 and 2008.

Historical Precedent and Long Recovery Periods

Burry relies on historical market data, noting that chart-trading algorithms largely ignore these long-term trends. Historical figures show significant inflation-adjusted declines during past economic cycles:

  • From 1966 to 1982, the inflation-adjusted S&P 500 fell about 53%.
  • Between 1929 and 1949, the real price return reached negative 58%.
  • Real prices dropped roughly 40% from the 2000 peak to the 2011 trough.

While dividends help soften these losses when reinvested—shrinking the 1966–1982 decline to about 10% and the 2000–2011 loss to about 25%—Burry's thesis centers on the time required to recover rather than total financial wipeouts. Each historical episode forced patient holders to wait many years, challenging the modern "buy the dip" investment culture.

Other financial institutions have also raised concerns, with Panmure Liberum issuing a bearish 5,000-point S&P 500 target for 2027. If an extended period of weak real returns materializes, analysts note it would pose a major test for alternative assets, including digital currencies like Bitcoin, whose resilience across various economic scenarios has been defended by figures such as Bitwise CIO Matt Hougan.
