Strategy executive chairman Michael Saylor renewed his views on Bitcoin as a form of digital energy on August 23, linking digital scarcity to durable economic control. Saylor describes the concept as portable value that owners can preserve and transfer through a decentralized network, serving as an investment metaphor rather than a formal accounting or legal classification.
Amid these remarks, Bitcoin traded near $77,175, bringing the estimated market value of Strategy's treasury holdings to approximately $64.86 billion. According to a regulatory filing from August 17, the company held 840,447 BTC acquired at a total cost of $63.36 billion, which includes fees and represents an average cost of $75,385 per coin. This position accounts for roughly 4% of Bitcoin's 21 million maximum supply, resulting in an unrealized gain of approximately $1.50 billion based on the August price.
Corporate financial reports note that this valuation does not constitute distributable profit, as it excludes debt, taxes, operating costs, and preferred dividend commitments. Strategy combines a volatile treasury asset with conventional corporate liabilities, requiring the firm to meet dollar-denominated obligations such as salaries, interest expenses, and preferred dividends regardless of market movements.
Between August 10 and August 16, Strategy reported no Bitcoin purchases or sales. Instead, the company raised $333.7 million by selling about 3.46 million MSTR shares. During the same period, it repurchased 1.39 million STRC preferred shares for $132.2 million, allocated $52.4 million toward STRC dividends, and added the remaining $149.1 million to its dollar reserve, bringing that reserve to $4.80 billion.
Chief Executive Phong Le has previously linked future Bitcoin accumulation to STRC moving closer to its $100 stated amount, though management has not announced a binding purchase schedule. Future regulatory filings will detail how Strategy balances capital allocation across MSTR share issuance, preferred stock repurchases, and potential expansion of its Bitcoin holdings.
