Boise, Idaho, is emerging as a central hub for American chipmaking through a $50 billion expansion by Micron Technology. The investment funds two large fabrication plants dedicated to advanced DRAM memory chips, with each facility featuring approximately 600,000 square feet of cleanroom space.
The overall infrastructure of the project functions similarly to a self-sustaining complex, incorporating utilities, water treatment facilities, parking structures, office buildings, a daycare, and a technician training center.
Timeline and Economic Impact
Construction on the first fabrication plant is currently running ahead of schedule. Equipment is scheduled to arrive in late 2026, with initial DRAM wafer production targeted for mid-2027. Work on the second plant has already begun and is scheduled for completion by late 2028.
The initiative is projected to create over 17,000 jobs in Idaho, encompassing both direct employment and indirect economic effects. To support this workforce, Micron has committed $75 million over a ten-year period through its Idaho Community Investment Framework to fund STEM education and workforce training. This includes a partnership with the College of Western Idaho to establish a pipeline for technicians.
The CHIPS Act and Global Context
The Boise expansion is supported by $6.4 billion in funding from the CHIPS and Science Act of 2022, a federal measure aimed at reshoring semiconductor manufacturing to the United States. Through these efforts, Micron aims to produce 40% of its DRAM output domestically by 2035.
DRAM serves as short-term memory for computers and has grown increasingly vital due to rising artificial intelligence workloads. Micron is one of three global companies that manufacture DRAM at scale, joining Samsung and SK Hynix, both of which are pursuing their own US expansion plans in Texas and Indiana.
