MicroStrategy's Bitcoin Holdings Deliver $21B Q3 Gain, Ranking Among Top S&P 500 Earners

MicroStrategy's concentrated Bitcoin strategy produced a $21 billion gain on digital assets in the third quarter, according to data shared by company leadership. That figure ranks seventh among the largest quarterly operating income figures of S&P 500 companies, placing it ahead of established giants Meta ($19 billion), Broadcom ($16 billion), and Walmart ($9 billion).

The gains reflect the sharp recovery in Bitcoin's price during mid-August, when the cryptocurrency rebounded significantly after weakness in the first half of 2026. MicroStrategy's stock price similarly recovered during this period, moving from roughly 41% down for the year to approximately 4.6% in positive territory.

Long-Term Performance Comparison

Over the period since August 2020, MicroStrategy has generated annualized returns of 52%, according to company statements. This exceeded Bitcoin's annualized return of 38% over the same timeframe. Traditional asset classes showed more modest performance: the Nasdaq 100 returned 19% annually, the S&P 500 returned 16%, gold returned 12%, and US real estate returned 5%. US bonds declined 0.91% annually.

Strategy Behind the Returns

MicroStrategy's outperformance stems from its strategy of using leverage to accumulate Bitcoin holdings. The company borrows capital and issues shares to purchase additional Bitcoin, amplifying gains when prices rise. This approach carries corresponding risk, as leveraged positions can move sharply in either direction depending on Bitcoin's price movements.

The stock's performance is directly tied to the value of its Bitcoin holdings. During quarters when Bitcoin appreciates, the company's asset base expands proportionally, driving stock gains. The opposite holds true during Bitcoin downturns.
