MicroStrategy Stock Falls 6.8% Year-to-Date Despite Record $20.9B Q3 Operating Income

MicroStrategy reported record third-quarter financial results for 2026, with operating income reaching $20.91 billion compared to $3.89 billion in the same quarter last year. The sharp increase was primarily driven by appreciation in the company's Bitcoin holdings.

To expand its position, MicroStrategy spent approximately $14.33 billion on Bitcoin purchases during Q3. By the end of the quarter, the company held approximately 848,517 BTC valued at $66.48 billion, representing a 26% increase in Bitcoin holdings since the start of 2026.

Stock Performance Diverges from Fundamentals

Despite the strong operating results, MicroStrategy's common stock (MSTR) declined 6.8% year-to-date, trading at $141.62 at the time of reporting. The stock also fell 2.44% in the past trading day.

The underperformance reflects a structural challenge: MicroStrategy's Bitcoin yield was negative 3.7% year-to-date. This occurred because share dilution from capital raises outpaced Bitcoin accumulation on a per-share basis, reducing individual shareholders' Bitcoin exposure even as the company's total holdings grew.

Funding Strategy and Capital Activity

MicroStrategy raised approximately $21.23 billion through capital markets in 2026, primarily through equity offerings, to fund Bitcoin purchases. During Q3 alone, the company generated $5.41 billion in net proceeds from MSTR share sales.

The company also repurchased approximately $2.04 billion in preferred stock shares at an average price of $97.39, against their $100 stated value. Additionally, MicroStrategy sold approximately $431.8 million in Bitcoin year-to-date to fund preferred stock dividends and repurchases.

Operating Results and Market Context

Total revenue declined 3% year-over-year to $125.4 million compared with $128.7 million in Q3 2025. The quarterly results coincided with Bitcoin's price surge from around $58,000 to $83,000 during Q3, with the cryptocurrency trading at $78,501.71 at press time, down 1.9% in the preceding 24 hours.

The disparity between strong operating income and weak stock performance underscores the company's earnings sensitivity to Bitcoin price movements, as well as the impact of capital structure decisions on shareholder returns.
