Monero (XMR) traded near $635, up approximately 2.56%, as a strong rally collides with rising leverage in the derivatives market. The latest rise comes as futures open interest has climbed above $300 million, a level that previously coincided with heightened volatility.
The combination puts Monero's next move in focus: continued buying could extend the rally, but crowded leveraged positions increase the risk of a sudden reversal.
Monero Rally Gains Momentum, but Leverage Raises the Stakes
Monero has recovered substantially from its midyear trading range, with XMR moving above its short- and medium-term exponential moving averages. The token has rallied toward the $635 area after spending much of the spring and early summer trading around $350–$450.
The breakout reflects renewed buying momentum, but derivatives positioning is becoming an important risk factor. Open interest in Monero futures has exceeded $300 million, approaching levels last seen before the sharp January sell-off. In that earlier episode, XMR surged toward $790 before falling below $300 in the following weeks.
That history does not guarantee a repeat, but it highlights how quickly a leveraged rally can unwind when positioning becomes crowded.
XMR Price Analysis: $650 Is the Next Test
The latest rally places Monero near $634, with momentum strengthening as the price moves away from its recent consolidation range. The next psychological hurdle is $650. A sustained move above this level could open the way toward $700, followed by the major $750–$800 resistance zone.
On the downside, the first support area sits around $570–$575, near the short-term moving-average region. A break below this zone could expose the $535–$540 area, where the next moving-average support is positioned. The broader trend would face a deeper test near $490–$500.
