Monero (XMR) has emerged as a standout performer in the cryptocurrency market, rallying to nearly $530 on August 31—its highest price since January. The privacy-focused token has gained 43% over the past month and now commands a market capitalization of nearly $10 billion, making it the 13th-largest cryptocurrency.
The rally has positioned XMR ahead of several prominent altcoins, including Chainlink (LINK) and Cardano (ADA), bringing it closer to the top 10 by market cap.
Catalysts Behind the Surge
A key driver of XMR's momentum has been THORChain's network upgrade, which introduced native support for Monero swaps. This technical development appears to have coincided with strong buying interest in the token.
Breaking through the $410 resistance level also served as a significant technical signal, according to market observers. XMR's absence from major exchanges has surprised some analysts, given the scale of its gains. Binance delisted the token at the beginning of 2024, while Monero remains unavailable on Coinbase. The token trades primarily on Kraken, KuCoin, and MEXC.
Technical Signals
Exchange flow data suggests continued strength may be ahead. Over recent days, outflows from centralized exchanges have outpaced inflows, indicating that investors are moving holdings to self-custody wallets and reducing immediate selling pressure on markets.
However, the token's Relative Strength Index (RSI) has reached approximately 77, above the 70 threshold that typically suggests overbought conditions and potential for a price correction.
