Morgan Stanley's Bitcoin Trust (MSBT) reached $634.83 million in net assets as of September 14, just five months after its April 8 launch on the New York Stock Exchange. The fund became the first spot bitcoin exchange-traded product offered by a major U.S. bank-affiliated asset manager.
Cumulative net inflows to the fund stand at $538.37 million. Notably, MSBT has recorded only one day of outflows since launch, on May 29, when $5.26 million left the product. Over the past 21 trading days, the fund saw buying on 12 days with total inflows of approximately $71.95 million.
Bank-Led Distribution Channel
The growth of Morgan Stanley's bitcoin ETF reflects a shift in how cryptocurrency products reach investors. Rather than being distributed solely by crypto-native firms and specialist asset managers, bitcoin ETFs are increasingly moving through traditional financial institutions that manage trillions of dollars for mainstream investors.
For Morgan Stanley clients, the product offers a familiar entry point into bitcoin without requiring direct custody, private keys, or cryptocurrency exchange accounts.
Institutional Accumulation Patterns
The minimal redemption activity suggests investors are treating the fund as a longer-term allocation rather than a short-term trading vehicle. The pattern of consistent inflows into an already crowded spot bitcoin ETF market demonstrates that a recognizable bank-linked brand can still attract fresh capital even after the initial ETF launch cycle has matured.
If other major banks launch similar products, bank-affiliated distribution could expand the buyer base well beyond early adopters and create a steadier source of spot demand for bitcoin.
