Mt. Gox Creditor Repayment Pushed to 2027 as Delays Continue

Mt. Gox has extended its creditor repayment deadline to October 31, 2027, according to an October 16 notice from rehabilitation trustee Nobuaki Kobayashi. A Japanese court approved the one-year extension from the previous deadline of October 31, 2026, citing continued administrative and payment-processing difficulties.

The extension covers three repayment categories under the rehabilitation plan: Base Repayment, Early Lump-Sum Repayment, and Intermediate Repayment. Kobayashi indicated that payments have been largely completed for creditors who fulfilled necessary requirements without complications, though many claimants remain unpaid either because they have not completed required procedures or have encountered processing problems.

This marks the fourth consecutive annual postponement. The trustee initially targeted October 2023 for completion, followed by extensions to October 2024, October 2025, and October 2026, before this latest delay to October 2027.

Mt. Gox filed for bankruptcy in February 2014 after reporting the loss of approximately 850,000 Bitcoin. The platform subsequently entered civil rehabilitation to return recovered assets to eligible creditors through cryptocurrency distributions and cash payments.

Since July 2024, Mt. Gox has distributed Bitcoin and Bitcoin Cash through designated exchanges including Kraken and Bitstamp. By March 2025, more than 19,500 creditors had received Bitcoin and Bitcoin Cash, following distributions in July and August 2024 and additional settlements between January and March 2025.

Further transfers require account verification, creditor information corrections, exchange acceptance arrangements, and security checks—procedures that require coordination among claimants, the trustee, and designated exchanges.

The trustee directed unpaid creditors seeking information about their claims to submit inquiries through the official rehabilitation claims system, recommending that claimants log in before contacting the trustee to facilitate identity verification.
