Mt. Gox's rehabilitation trustee has extended the deadline for creditor repayments to October 31, 2027, from October 31, 2026, following court approval announced on October 16.
The one-year extension aims to provide creditors who have not yet received funds additional time to complete required procedures or resolve issues that have prevented repayment processing.
Current repayment status
Trustee Nobuaki Kobayashi reported that base repayments, early lump-sum repayments, and intermediate repayments have been largely completed for rehabilitation creditors who finished necessary procedures without encountering problems. However, a significant number of creditors remain unpaid, either because they have not completed required steps or have faced various obstacles during the process. The extension is intended to facilitate repayments to these creditors where reasonably practicable.
Repayments began in July 2024, flowing through intermediaries including Kraken, Bitstamp, and BitGo. As of mid-2026, approximately 34,000 to 34,500 BTC remained under the trustee's control, awaiting distribution to creditors who had not yet been paid.

The planned distributions include approximately 142,000 BTC, about 143,000 BCH, and ¥69 billion in cash. The exchange collapsed in 2014 following a hack that resulted in the loss of approximately 850,000 BTC. The current payout covers roughly 142,000 BTC, meaning creditors will not be fully compensated in Bitcoin terms.
What the extension means
The extended deadline sets an outer limit for completing repayments rather than a schedule for individual distributions. Batches of coins could still be released before late 2027, depending on how quickly creditors complete their remaining steps. The roughly 34,000 BTC still held by the trustee represents approximately a quarter of the Bitcoin earmarked for distribution and remains a focus for market participants given potential selling pressure if recipients choose to liquidate their holdings.
