The National Sheriffs' Association has ended its opposition to the CLARITY Act, submitting a letter on September 3rd to Senate Majority Leader John Thune and Minority Leader Chuck Schumer. The shift marks a significant development in ongoing efforts to pass the cryptocurrency regulation legislation.
The NSA's earlier concerns centered on provisions affecting DeFi platforms, mixers, and blockchain software developers. The organization had feared that certain protections in the bill could hinder law enforcement's ability to identify or prosecute individuals using crypto infrastructure for illegal activities, particularly citing Section 604 as potentially granting overly broad protection from anti-money-laundering requirements.
In its latest letter, however, the NSA acknowledged the legislation's complexity and said it now believes Congress should complete the legislative process. "At this time, we believe the most appropriate course is to step back and allow the legislative process to proceed to establish a clear, effective, and much needed regulatory framework," the organization stated.
Senator Cynthia Lummis highlighted the development on social media, stating that the bipartisan bill provides law enforcement with tools to address illicit finance crimes and calling for passage of the legislation.
Despite the NSA's position shift, legislative momentum faces headwinds. The House of Representatives has limited scheduled voting sessions in September before the midterm elections, with previously scheduled voting weeks canceled. Polymarket odds on the CLARITY Act's passage have declined to 14%, down from 18% the previous day.
