Neutrl has opened an emergency on-chain redemption route for NUSD holders following losses inside a junior Strata collateral tranche. The on-chain contract is currently paying around $0.51 in USDC per NUSD, providing holders with a clearer idea of what they can recover.
A Stablecoin Redemption At Half Value
While stablecoins are typically built around the premise that one token remains worth roughly one dollar, Neutrl's emergency redemption contract reflects the actual value of the underlying assets at about 51 cents per token. The figure comes directly from the redemption contract rather than a newly declared $0.51 peg.
The issue stems from losses within the junior tranche of a Strata collateral vault. The remaining senior collateral provides the assets currently used to fund the emergency redemptions. While the structure prevents a complete loss for NUSD holders, payouts are significantly below the expected dollar-for-dollar value.
Tranches Move Losses Around
The situation highlights the function of structured decentralized finance (DeFi) products. Junior tranches are designed to absorb losses before senior capital is impacted, protecting some investors, but they cannot make the underlying loss disappear. Once the junior layer suffers severe impairment, the overall value available to the system shrinks, translating abstract balance-sheet damage into a real price for token holders.
