A new report published by Nexo on September 23 indicates that while a significant majority of affluent investors hold digital assets, very few have fully integrated them into their broader financial lives. The study, titled “The Future of Digital Wealth 2026,” surveyed 1,000 wealthy investors across the United States, United Kingdom, and Argentina between February and March of this year using the research platform Attest.
According to the survey, 67% of respondents own crypto assets. However, Nexo's Crypto Integration Index—which measures engagement across metrics such as allocation size, holding duration, and retirement planning—revealed an average score of just 4.83 out of 10. Only 4.7% of participants reached a score of 7 or higher, a threshold categorized as “structurally integrated.”
Furthermore, 42.6% of surveyed individuals hold crypto without committing to its integration into their broader financial planning. Less than 20% of respondents expect that crypto will become their primary personal wealth driver over the next decade.
Regional Differences in Ownership and Integration
The survey highlighted distinct regional variations across the three surveyed countries:
- Argentina: Recorded the highest ownership rate at 74%, but posted the lowest average integration score at 4.62.
- United States: Had the lowest ownership rate at 62.3%, yet achieved the highest average integration score at 5.07.
- United Kingdom: Positioned in the middle with a 65% ownership rate and a Crypto Integration Index score of 4.75.
Barriers to Deeper Adoption
The data shows that risk perception accounts for just 13.6% of the variation in integration scores. Instead, practical considerations such as asset substitution and retirement planning account for 54.2% of the variation.
Among the 4.7% of respondents classified as structurally integrated, operational hurdles remain the primary concerns. Security concerns were cited by 36% of these users, followed by high fees at 34% and platform complexity at 28%.
The findings point to a latent market among the 42.6% of affluent investors who own crypto but lack financial integration. Factors such as regulatory clarity regarding crypto in retirement accounts, tax treatment for staking income, and standardized reporting may play a role in addressing these practical barriers moving forward.
