Nine major corporations have objected to their shares trading on OKXICE, a tokenized stock venue operated by OKX and ICE, the company that owns the New York Stock Exchange. The objecting companies are Verizon, Broadcom, UnitedHealth, Cerebras, AppLovin, Applied Digital, Rocket Lab, CoreWeave and Applied Optoelectronics, representing 14% of the 63 companies the venue planned to list.
OKXICE operates under an SEC Innovation Exemption unveiled in September, which allows platforms to trade tokenized stocks without registering as exchanges. The venue offers around-the-clock trading through Uniswap v4 pools on OKX's XLayer chain, with settlements in USDC and USDT. A third-party tokenizer holds the underlying shares one-for-one at a registered broker-dealer.
Regulatory and Operational Concerns
The venue operates without SEC registration and is not subject to Regulation NMS, the rule that ensures investors receive the best displayed price. Trading is capped at a fraction of each stock's normal volume, and administrators can upgrade smart contracts without advance notice.
Nasdaq has also opted its own shares out of trading on rival venues, citing the lack of real-time best prices and consolidated tape reporting. The company recently received approval for its own tokenized securities pilot.
The Issuer Consent Factor
The objections reveal an overlooked challenge in tokenized stock development: issuer consent. Since a tokenized share requires a real share held behind it, the underlying company retains the ability to object. Corporate finance leaders can choose to opt out if they determine that a thinner, more volatile market trading their stock outside normal hours with no best-execution duty is undesirable.
The impact extends across the broader ecosystem. Robinhood, Kraken and Backed Finance all operate stock-token products that depend on a growing pool of tokenizable equities. Robinhood Chain, which pairs memecoins against tokenized NVDA and TSLA, is particularly affected. Uniswap was expected to serve as a primary liquidity provider for these tokenized share pools.
Industry participants will be watching whether these nine objections signal a broader trend that could reshape the future of tokenized stock development.
