NVIDIA has agreed to acquire the open-source AI platform Hugging Face for nearly $13 billion. In a blog post, NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang announced the agreement to purchase the company for $12,930,300,000 to expand AI infrastructure and push for open-weight AI models.
According to the announcement, Hugging Face is used by over 18 million developers, researchers, and creators to share more than 3 million models, 500,000 datasets, and 1 million applications. Furthermore, over 200,000 companies utilize the platform to discover, evaluate, customize, and deploy artificial intelligence.
Huang assured that Hugging Face will remain an open platform for the entire AI ecosystem. Developers will retain the freedom to choose their preferred models, frameworks, clouds, inference service providers, and computing platforms, with NVIDIA compute remaining optional for building and deploying through Hugging Face.
Hugging Face will continue to support open-source and open-weight models, alongside multi-cloud and multi-accelerator development and deployment. Huang noted that NVIDIA's infrastructure, engineering, and global reach will help improve platform reliability, safety, model evaluation, inference, and deployment capabilities while preserving the open ecosystem.
The acquisition follows other recent developments for NVIDIA, including an agreement last month to build an Ohio data center with OpenAI on a 20-year lease and the launch of the Nemotron 3.5 Lightning model.
