Nvidia Second-Quarter Earnings Report Focuses Attention on Broader AI Market

Nvidia (NVDA) is scheduled to report its second-quarter earnings on Wednesday, with Wall Street projecting record sales near $92 billion. Analysts also anticipate net income to climb 95% to more than $51.5 billion, extending the company's rapid growth.

The upcoming report is expected to influence spending across chipmakers, cloud providers, and the wider artificial intelligence trade. Nvidia has beaten earnings estimates for 14 consecutive quarters. In the previous quarter, net income grew 210% year over year, exceeding Wall Street's 126% forecast according to FactSet data.

This track record has raised expectations, and Nvidia enters the report following its longest losing streak since 2022. Analysts have increased sales estimates to $92 billion, up from $78 billion at the beginning of the year.

The broader market implications extend beyond a single chipmaker. OpenAI recently reported that its revenue rose 18% last quarter while losses deepened, and hyperscalers are increasingly relying on debt to fund data centers. These factors have contributed to concerns regarding AI spending. To support this ecosystem, Nvidia joined a $500 billion AI financing plan with banks and acquired a stake in power supplier Cloverleaf Infrastructure.

Market participants are displaying mixed positioning ahead of the announcement. Nvidia's stock has declined in the trading session following each of its last four earnings reports, despite beating estimates. Options markets currently price a 5.3% swing following Wednesday's release, exceeding the stock's 4.8% average post-earnings move over the past year, according to Option Research & Technology Services. Active contracts include puts targeting a drop to between $205 and $210 from Friday's $214.75 close, per Cboe Global Markets data, amid concerns over rising memory prices and borrowing costs.

Conversely, some analysts maintain a bullish outlook. HSBC's Frank Lee raised his price target to $360 from $325, citing Nvidia's supplier partnerships and its role in open-source AI.

Brian Mulberry, chief market strategist at Zacks Investment Management, described the magnitude of the event to the Wall Street Journal, stating, “It’s kind of becoming more and more like the World Cup final than the Super Bowl at this point. It’s just gotten to be that big.”
