Nvidia Second-Quarter Earnings Set to Test Global AI Infrastructure Spending

Nvidia is scheduled to announce its second-quarter financial results after the conclusion of trading on Wednesday, August 26. The announcement will be monitored across the entire artificial intelligence supply chain, including chipmakers, cloud providers, and equipment suppliers, to evaluate whether increased spending on global infrastructure translates into actual orders for Nvidia’s hardware.

According to Nvidia's investor relations team, the earnings call will take place at 2 p.m. Pacific Time, with results made public around 1:20 p.m. Industry analysts closely track these figures because Nvidia's chips are foundational to data centers developed by major technology companies such as Microsoft, Alphabet, Amazon, Meta, and Oracle, providing a real-time gauge of infrastructure expansion.

Market research firms highlight substantial growth in the sector. TrendForce upgraded its AI server shipment forecast for 2026 to nearly 31% higher than the previous year, while estimating that the eight largest cloud companies will increase their spending by about 90% to over $886.7 billion. Additionally, IDC reported that global server spending rose by 30.7% in the first quarter of 2026 due to the adoption of GPU technology.

Data center hardware remains the core of Nvidia's business operations. During its May 20 report, data center sales reached a record $75.2 billion out of $81.6 billion in total revenue, with the remaining $6.4 billion driven by Edge Computing. Nvidia has since separated its data center reporting into Hyperscale and a second division serving AI clouds alongside industrial and commercial markets. First-quarter data center revenues increased by 85% year-on-year, and the company projected total revenues of approximately $91 billion for the upcoming quarter.

Questions persist regarding the sustainability of cloud computing budgets. A Reuters report indicated that major hyperscalers could see capital expenditures outpace free cash flow growth by 2027. Meanwhile, Nvidia's current outlook excludes significant data center compute sales to China, following tightening U.S. export restrictions and Bernstein estimates that Nvidia's share of China's AI chip market could decline to about 8% in 2026. Chief Executive Jensen Huang has noted that Nvidia has largely conceded that market to domestic suppliers like Huawei.

As analysts anticipate Nvidia to approach $92 billion in fiscal second-quarter revenue and surpass $100 billion in the following quarter, investors increasingly question who captures the ultimate economic returns from extensive capital expenditures, alongside reports that AI-server prices could rise by more than 15% from early 2027 due to surging memory costs.
