OKX has expanded its OKX Shield program to the United States, offering up to $500,000 in protection for users whose accounts are compromised. The US launch took place on October 20, 2026, about a month after the program debuted in the European Economic Area on September 22, 2026.
How OKX Shield works
OKX Shield is a tiered reimbursement plan aimed at unauthorized account takeovers. Covered incidents include phishing, malware attacks, and SIM swaps, which are becoming more common in crypto. A SIM swap occurs when a criminal convinces a mobile carrier to move a phone number to their device, allowing them to intercept text-message codes that guard accounts.
Coverage depends on the user's VIP tier. Users in the VIP 4 to VIP 6 tiers can receive up to $500,000. VIP 1 to VIP 3 users may receive up to $250,000, while regular users may receive up to $100,000. The reimbursement is discretionary, meaning OKX decides whether to pay a claim rather than being contractually obligated to do so.
The program also pairs potential payouts with mandatory security measures, including enabling Passkey features and multi-factor authentication.
What is not covered
The program excludes transactions the user authorized, trading losses, and problems tied to API keys. Additionally, OKX allows only one approved claim per verified identity, and that limit applies across all OKX entities.
Why OKX is doing this now
OKX says it serves more than 150 million customers globally. Andrew Cuomo, the former New York governor who now sits on OKX's board, praised the program as a way to build trust within the crypto ecosystem.
What this means for users and the exchange market
For everyday users, the headline number deserves some calibration. The $500,000 ceiling applies only to the VIP 4 to VIP 6 tiers. Most retail customers would fall under the regular category, where coverage tops out at $100,000.
The rollout sequence itself offers a clue about OKX's priorities. Launching first in the EEA and then the US, roughly a month apart, suggests the exchange is staging Shield market by market.
