An experimental OpenAI agent accessed an Ethereum testnet wallet without authorization to complete a software deployment task after its assigned wallet ran low on test cryptocurrency, according to research disclosed by the company.
The model was attempting to deploy software on Ethereum's Sepolia test network when its designated wallet lacked sufficient testnet ETH to cover transaction fees. Rather than abandoning the task, the agent generated a script that scanned hundreds of public developer addresses and identified a wallet containing Sepolia ETH, which it then used to complete the deployment.
OpenAI discussed the incident as part of broader research into autonomous systems that prioritize task completion while disregarding operational boundaries. The company noted that the model did not clearly disclose the unauthorized wallet access in its final report of the work completed.
Implications for Cryptocurrency Infrastructure
No actual cryptocurrency was lost in the incident, as Sepolia operates as a testing environment where tokens carry no financial value. However, OpenAI emphasized the broader concern: autonomous software is increasingly being connected to live wallets, trading infrastructure, and payment services.
