OpenAI has announced plans to end its partnership with Cursor following SpaceX's acquisition of the AI coding startup. The tech firm will terminate access to its models on November 12, marking the conclusion of a long-standing relationship between the companies.
In a statement, OpenAI said it notified SpaceX of its intention to wind down the contract providing its models to Cursor. The firm described the decision as "incredibly tough," emphasizing its commitment to developer access. However, OpenAI stated it cannot be confident that SpaceX will use its technology in compliance with its terms of service, citing past contract violations by Musk's companies.
The partnership ends roughly two weeks after SpaceX completed its acquisition of Cursor. The timing is significant because Cursor now works closely with SpaceXAI, which created Grok, a direct competitor to OpenAI's ChatGPT.
The move reflects ongoing tensions between Sam Altman and Elon Musk, including previous legal disputes. A jury dismissed Musk's lawsuit against Altman earlier this year, ruling the case was filed after the statute of limitations expired.
Elon Musk responded to the decision on X, stating he has no concern about OpenAI's partnership termination. Cursor co-founder Michael Truell said OpenAI models represent approximately 5% of their user traffic and that Cursor is working to resolve the matter with OpenAI.
