Optimism to operate Unichain infrastructure, expanding multi-chain operator role

Optimism is expanding its role as operator of Ethereum-based chains, with Unichain, Uniswap Labs' layer-2 solution, planning to transfer production sequencing, public node access, monitoring and incident response to Optimism under an October 9 migration announcement.

The testnet move on October 13 and mainnet move on October 29 follow an operating strategy announced by Optimism in its Ink initiative: product teams build applications and ecosystems while Optimism handles infrastructure. Soneium reached a similar agreement in September using the same OP Stack model.

Operational scope and service commitments

Under its Fully Managed service tier, OP Labs will run Unichain's sequencer, batcher, proposer and chain infrastructure, and handle security patching. Soneium's agreement promises a 99.9% monthly uptime target and around-the-clock incident response. Unichain's existing Mission Critical add-on advertises 99.95% uptime, a 15-minute initial response time for critical incidents and status updates every 30 minutes.

The shift consolidates day-to-day operational roles under a single provider. Sequencing, data submission and state proposals become Optimism's responsibility, while Ethereum settlement and proof verification remain separate.

User protections and exit mechanisms

Unichain will retain Stage 1 rollup status with permissionless fault proofs and its existing contract-upgrade governance. Users retain access to forced transaction inclusion through Ethereum with up to a 12-hour delay if the sequencer becomes unavailable or unresponsive, allowing transactions to enter the chain and initiate withdrawals.

However, withdrawal paths differ across the three chains under Optimism management. Unichain and Ink permit any funded actor to propose state roots if the primary proposer fails. Soneium restricts state proposals to whitelisted entities, meaning proposer failure would freeze withdrawals despite forced inclusion remaining available.

All three chains maintain seven-day proof-maturity periods for withdrawals. Unichain and Ink have additional settlement-related delays totaling seven days after proof maturity.

Governance and upgrade authority

Uniswap says its governance arrangement persists. L2BEAT assessments show joint Foundation and Security Council approval is required for upgrades on all three chains, with no delay on regular upgrades and no guaranteed exit window before contract changes take effect.

Production operations, contract-upgrade authority and asset custody remain separate questions. Optimism's expanded operational role does not transfer governance powers or eliminate the upgrade authorities that could modify the chains unilaterally.
