Optimism’s Token House has voted to redirect approximately $49 million worth of OP tokens through a governance proposal that passed with about 84% support. The approved plan reroutes half of the Superchain’s net revenue toward recurring OP token buybacks over a 12-month pilot period.
The Superchain, which is Optimism's network of OP Stack-based chains, generates net revenue from sequencer fees and related activities. Under the new program, 50% of this revenue will be used for systematic OP token buybacks throughout the pilot year.
The vote took place within the Token House, Optimism's primary governance chamber where OP holders vote on financial policies and treasury allocations. While the proposal achieved 84% approval, on-chain governance participation rates tend to skew toward larger holders, meaning the vote reflects the sentiment of participants rather than every individual OP holder.
Historically, Optimism has utilized direct token distributions, such as airdrops, retroactive public goods funding, and user incentive programs, to build its community and attract participants. The new vote shifts away from that strategy by using revenue to reduce circulating supply instead.
The proposal also drew attention to governance dynamics, as the team that cast the deciding vote was funded by the Optimism Foundation. The 12-month pilot program will be monitored as it runs to observe its effects on price stability and developer activity.
