Plante Moran Advisors increased its spot Bitcoin ETF holdings by 70% in the third quarter, bringing the position to $42 million, according to the firm’s quarterly 13F filing.
The filing shows the Bitcoin exposure is split across three funds: BlackRock’s iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT), the Grayscale Bitcoin Trust (GBTC), and Fidelity’s Wise Origin Bitcoin Fund (FBTC). No other digital assets or tokens were reported.
A 13F is a quarterly disclosure that large investment managers file with the SEC, offering a periodic snapshot of their portfolio holdings.
Small Slice of a Larger Book
Plante Moran Advisors sits within the larger Plante Moran Financial Advisors, LLC, which manages approximately $2.2 billion in total assets under management. The Bitcoin ETF position therefore remains a small portion of the overall portfolio, with most assets still allocated to conventional equity and bond ETFs.
Advisors Lead Institutional Buying
Plante Moran is not alone in raising its Bitcoin ETF exposure. Creative Planning, another wealth management firm, reported a 43% increase in its Bitcoin ETF exposure over the same quarter.
Galaxy Research identified wealth managers and advisors as key drivers of institutional net buying of Bitcoin ETFs during the period. Registered investment advisors broadly shifted toward net buying, based on recent 13F filings. Meanwhile, some hedge funds trimmed their Bitcoin ETF positions during the same period.
ETF Access Since 2024
Spot Bitcoin ETFs first launched in the US in early 2024. Before that, investors seeking Bitcoin exposure in a traditional brokerage account had limited options. The launch gave advisors a familiar product that fits into existing portfolio software, compliance reviews, and client statements, without requiring private keys or crypto exchange accounts.
