Poll: 72% of Americans Want Candidates Backing US-Built Financial Technology

A majority of Americans say it is important for political candidates to support policies that encourage financial technology built in the United States, according to a new poll from the DeFi Education Fund and Ipsos.

The survey of 1,545 people, conducted in September and released Tuesday, found that 72% of respondents said it was “somewhat” to “extremely” important for politicians to back policies encouraging domestic fintech development. Within that group, 35% said it was “very” or “extremely” important to ensure that builders of next-generation financial technology are encouraged to do so in the US, while 37% called it “somewhat important.”

At the same time, the poll indicated limited familiarity with digital assets among respondents. Only 9% said they were familiar with crypto, and 5% with stablecoins. A large majority, 87%, said they had not held any digital assets in the previous 12 months.

When asked specifically about encouraging growth in blockchain, crypto, and DeFi, only 13% said it was “very” or “extremely” important for a political candidate to do so.

“Ownership of crypto and openness to DeFi are largely consistent with 2025, and interest looks consistent across party lines,” Ipsos said.

The poll was conducted about two months before Americans were set to vote on the next session of Congress in the 2026 midterm elections, in which crypto policies and laws could be a factor at the polling stations. Political action committees backed by crypto companies have already spent tens of millions of dollars in an attempt to influence voters in key races.
