A new poll shows that the vast majority of Americans remain skeptical about receiving the $5,000 payment promised by President Trump if Republicans maintain control of Congress in the upcoming midterms.
According to an NBC News Decision Desk poll conducted alongside SurveyMonkey, 71% of respondents believe they will not receive the funds. Within that group, 42% stated they “definitely” will not get the check, while 29% said they “probably” will not. Conversely, only 14% of respondents reported expecting to receive the payment.
President Trump initially introduced the proposal during the Republican Party's midterm convention in Dallas, pledging the $5,000 payout to every American adult contingent upon the GOP retaining both the House and the Senate. Analysts note that such payments would require congressional approval and carry an estimated cost of $1.2 trillion. Trump has previously suggested tariff dividend checks and Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) stimulus checks that were ultimately never distributed.
The survey also highlighted broader sentiment shifts, with 71% of adults reporting that the country is on the “wrong track,” marking the highest share recorded during Trump's second term. Additionally, Trump's approval rating dropped to 34% among U.S. adults, representing a new second-term low in polling conducted by NBC.
The poll surveyed 19,135 adults between September 28 and October 12, featuring a margin of error of plus or minus 2.6 percentage points.
