Polymarket CEO Hints at Native Token With 'Programmable Utility' at Singapore Conference

Polymarket CEO Shayne Coplan has renewed speculation about a native cryptocurrency after discussing an on-chain asset at the TOKEN2049 conference in Singapore. During a fireside conversation with Balaji Srinivasan, Coplan described the potential asset as having "real programmable utility" tied to Polymarket's platform economy, though he offered no launch date, mechanism details, or confirmation of an airdrop.

The CEO did not clarify whether a future token would grant governance rights, provide access to platform functions, or give holders a claim on revenue. He also offered no indication that existing users would automatically qualify for any distribution.

Coplan's latest comments follow an October post on X in which he replaced XRP with "$POLY" in a list of leading cryptocurrencies, accompanied by a thinking-face emoji. That same month, Polymarket's Chief Marketing Officer Matthew Modabber indicated the company intended to launch a token and conduct an airdrop. The parent company filed trademark applications for POLY and $POLY in February 2026, but neither development confirmed an imminent issuance.

To date, Polymarket has not announced a token generation event, published airdrop eligibility requirements, provided a snapshot date, or shared claim instructions. The platform's existing pUSD collateral token, used for trading on its Polygon-based system, remains separate from any proposed POLY asset.

Trading Losses and Legal Challenges

A Galaxy Research study examining 2.9 million human-paced Polymarket accounts found that more than 69% of traders finished below break-even, with combined losses of $338.9 million. The findings tracked international operations through wallet addresses rather than verified individual traders.

Polymarket faces multiple legal challenges. A New York lawsuit alleges the platform's US operation offered unlicensed gambling and allowed users aged 18 to 20 to trade, despite the state's minimum age of 21 for mobile sports betting. The city of Baltimore has also taken legal action against Polymarket and rival Kalshi for allegedly offering illegal sports betting. Additionally, South Korean police opened criminal charges against 26 platform users over nearly $13 million in illegal wagers.
