Polymarket Pays Over 800 X Users to Promote Esports Content, Study Finds

Polymarket is paying more than 800 X users to quote-post content from its esports accounts, according to a report published by ReaderGrev on October 15. Payments range from $10 to several hundred dollars per post, with compensation issued in cryptocurrency.

Participants are recruited through a private Discord server where they receive prompts to like and quote-retweet posts from Polymarket's branded esports accounts covering League of Legends, Valorant, Counter-Strike, and Dota 2. A company representative instructed participants that the posts needed to "look organic."

The participant base has grown significantly. According to Polymarket representatives cited in the report, the program expanded from more than 300 creators in early August to over 800 creators two months later.

Payment Structure and Compensation

Fees are negotiated when participants join and are based on the views their posts typically drew before joining the program. ReaderGrev documented participant fees of $45 and $75 per post, with some creators earning $200 to $300 per post. One participant earned nearly $900 in a month from approximately a dozen posts, while others reported starting fees as low as $10.

Participants log their posts, tax details, and crypto wallet addresses through a dashboard called PolyTrack. Representatives also offered a 3 percent commission to anyone who recruited new participants.

ReaderGrev estimated that Polymarket pays out $2,000 to $4,000 per post in its busier programs, describing this figure as "almost certainly an undercount."

Disclosure and History

Polymarket's External Marketing Guidelines require disclosure labels to be "clear, conspicuous, in plain language, and not hidden." Many of the quote-posts carry X's paid partnership tag, according to one participant interviewed by ReaderGrev.

However, Discord prompts used to include instructions to add the "Paid Partnership tag," but this reminder has been absent since late August, for reasons that were not immediately clear to ReaderGrev.

Polymarket previously shifted away from PayPal payments. A representative stated in July that the company's PayPal accounts kept "getting blocked" due to payment volume. In June 2024, Politico reported that Polymarket's chief marketing officer had used a personal PayPal account to pay influencers, including at least $350,000 to creators who promoted the platform on X, with about two dozen of those creators posting roughly 490 times without disclosing they were paid.

The Wall Street Journal also reported that Polymarket had paid creators to stage winning bets on copies of its site.

Polymarket did not respond to requests for comment from ReaderGrev.
