Public Citizen Reports $4.7B in Investor Losses From Trump Crypto Ventures

The nonprofit consumer advocacy organization Public Citizen reported that investors have lost at least an estimated $4.7 billion through digital asset ventures involving US President Donald Trump and his family since 2022.

According to Public Citizen's analysis, the largest losses came from the Official Trump memecoin, with $3.2 billion in investor losses. Additional losses were attributed to Trump's nonfungible token trading cards launched in 2022, the World Liberty Financial governance token, and Trump Media's digital asset treasury. Public Citizen noted that World Liberty Financial's USD1 stablecoin investors "haven't suffered major losses."

The organization characterized memecoin losses as "wealth transferred to a small group of early buyers rather than money that simply vanished."

Trump's Reported Earnings

Public Citizen documented significant earnings flowing to Trump from these ventures, including $7.2 million from NFT licensing fees and royalties, more than $600 million from World Liberty token sales and equity stake sales, $635 million in memecoin licensing fees, and $197 million in revenue from World Liberty capital contributions. Trump's 2025 financial disclosures reported $1.4 billion in total earnings tied to crypto, though this did not reflect his ongoing stakes in the ventures.

Regulatory and Ethics Concerns

Public Citizen renewed calls for ethics provisions in the Digital Asset Market Clarity Act, arguing that "the president's policy choices and personal portfolio cannot be separated." The group called for legislation requiring US presidents and their families to divest from crypto industry projects.

Trump met with crypto company executives to discuss a "fair version" of the bill. The measure is scheduled for a cloture vote on September 15, which will require at least 60 Senate votes to advance.

The White House did not provide an immediate response to requests for comment, though White House Spokesperson Anna Kelly has previously stated there are "no conflicts of interest" regarding Trump's crypto investments.
