Abstract, the Ethereum layer-2 network operated by Pudgy Penguins parent company Igloo Inc., will shut down on December 15. Users must withdraw their assets before the deadline through Abstract's Migration Hub or native bridge, which carries a three-hour delay. Funds remaining on the network after the shutdown date will become inaccessible.
The team cited multiple reasons for the closure, including a limited DeFi ecosystem, thin on-chain liquidity, minimal institutional adoption, and a smaller budget compared to competing layer-2 networks. Igloo said that operating a chain focused exclusively on consumer crypto applications has proven unsustainable as a standalone business model.
During its operation, Abstract processed over 325 million transactions and recorded more than $6 billion in decentralized exchange volume. The network generated over $40 million in ecosystem revenue and hosted more than 4 million Abstract Global Wallets. Brands including Red Bull Racing and Disney used the chain to engage audiences.
Abstract is a ZK-rollup, a layer-2 network that bundles transactions and verifies them on Ethereum using zero-knowledge proofs. Igloo designed it as a platform for consumer-focused applications intended for everyday users, aiming to replicate the mainstream success Pudgy Penguins achieved through toys and social media.
Abstract is the second Ethereum layer-2 to announce a shutdown recently. Blast, the Paradigm-backed network that previously attracted billions in deposits, announced its closure last week due to operating costs exceeding revenue.
Abstract warned users to exercise caution regarding impersonators, counterfeit migration websites, and unsolicited direct messages claiming to represent the project.
