Ray Dalio Backs Bitcoin as U.S. Debt Projected to Reach $60 Trillion

Bridgewater Associates founder Ray Dalio has expressed support for non-government-produced assets like gold and bitcoin, pointing to growing national debt, weakening demand for government bonds, and monetary expansion as pressures that could erode traditional currencies.

In a recent analysis, Dalio projected that U.S. debt could reach between $55 trillion and $60 trillion within a decade. Official figures show that total federal debt topped $40 trillion for the first time as of August 18. According to Dalio's debt-cycle framework, persistent deficits, rising interest costs, and ongoing borrowing could trigger severe financial disruption if fiscal courses remain unchanged.

Recommendations on Scarce Assets

To help protect against currency depreciation and reduce portfolio risk, Dalio advises investors to underweight debt assets like bonds while allocating 10% to 15% of their funds to gold, alongside a small position in bitcoin. He noted that non-government-produced monies are expected to perform relatively well as sovereign currencies weaken.

Bitcoin's potential role is supported by its predetermined maximum supply of 21 million coins and characteristics such as portability, self-custody, and resistance to monetary debasement. However, Dalio's support remains measured due to the asset's substantial volatility, its correlation with technology stocks during market sell-offs, and lingering concerns regarding potential government controls, code vulnerabilities, and central bank reserve policies.

Fiscal Outlook and Market Context

Independent assessments and Congressional Budget Office projections indicate continued fiscal expansion, with public debt expected to rise significantly over the coming years. At the same time, the U.S. Department of the Treasury announced an expansion of its long-term liquidity-support buybacks, increasing maximum purchase sizes for certain securities to support market liquidity.

While Dalio continues to favor gold as a more established monetary asset, his measured inclusion of bitcoin highlights a broader strategy of diversification away from debt-heavy portfolios in response to mounting fiscal pressures.
