Regulators Across Six Continents Warn of Rising Investment Scams Targeting Investor Trust

Regulators across six continents have issued warnings about investment scams that exploit personal relationships and impersonate trusted authorities. The Securities and Exchange Commission, alongside five U.S. partner organizations, released a joint warning on October 5 highlighting the growing threat of relationship investment and impersonation fraud as part of World Investor Week, now in its 10th year.

The campaign involves the International Organization of Securities Commissions, a global association of securities regulators. U.S. partners in the effort include the Commodity Futures Trading Commission, Financial Industry Regulatory Authority, Securities Investor Protection Corporation, National Futures Association, and North American Securities Administrators Association.

How Relationship Investment Scams Work

Relationship schemes typically begin with unsolicited contact that develops into friendship or romance over weeks or months. Fraudsters then introduce a purported investment opportunity, often using fake websites or apps to display fabricated returns and encourage larger deposits. A common tactic involves allowing small initial withdrawals to build confidence before blocking access to funds entirely.

Recent enforcement actions highlight the scope of these schemes. In September 2024, the SEC filed its first relationship investment scam cases involving purported crypto platforms Nanobit and Coinw6, alleging that professional impersonation and romantic relationships were used to solicit money. A court entered a default final judgment against four entities and two individuals in the Nanobit case on June 16.

More recent fraud charges filed September 29 targeted entities behind Cryptoaiml and TSAI programs, involving more than $15.3 million. Both operations allegedly used online relationships and false regulatory claims to attract deposits. Cryptoaiml allegedly displayed fictitious profits and demanded withdrawal fees, while TSAI promoted AI trading bots that did not exist.

Impersonation Tactics and Cryptocurrency Threats

Impersonators pose as government employees, investment advisers, or representatives of legitimate firms. In April, regulators warned of scammers impersonating SEC officials through social media and text messages using official branding. The new bulletin notes that artificial intelligence makes these deceptions increasingly difficult to distinguish from genuine communications and warns about falsified documents.

Criminals seek sensitive information including passwords, account details, and cryptocurrency wallet credentials. Specific targets include private keys, which authorize cryptocurrency transfers, and seed phrases, the recovery words used to restore wallet access.

Investor Resources and Education

SEC Chairman Paul S. Atkins urged investors to use resources available on the SEC's Investor.gov website and remain vigilant against potential scams. John Moses, director of the agency's Office of Investor Education and Assistance, highlighted the website's free information and financial planning tools as part of broader fraud protection efforts.

A joint investor education webinar is scheduled for October 6 to cover relationship scams, regulator impersonation, and financial influencers. Attendance is free and requires registration.
