Researchers Develop First Post-Quantum Security Solution for Bitcoin's Lightning Network

Researchers from East Texas A&M University, North American University, Florida Gulf Coast University, and Florida Institute of Technology have announced the development of the first full post-quantum security design for the Bitcoin Lightning Network.

The team, led by Dr. Ahmet Kurt, an assistant professor in East Texas A&M's Department of Computer Science and Information Systems, completed the implementation in approximately three to four months using roughly 11,000 lines of code in Rust-Lightning. The solution represents a complete working implementation rather than a prototype.

How the Solution Works

The post-quantum defense layers new quantum-resistant cryptography on top of Lightning's existing security rather than replacing it. The hybrid approach uses ML-DSA digital signatures and ML-KEM key exchange algorithms, both standardized by the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology, alongside classical cryptographic methods that Lightning currently relies on.

Under this design, an attacker would need to break both the new quantum-resistant cryptography and the existing classical cryptography to compromise a connection or forge a payment request.

Why Lightning Needs Quantum Protection

Lightning enables fast, inexpensive Bitcoin payments through a network of off-chain channels, allowing transactions to bypass the blockchain. However, its cryptography could eventually be vulnerable to sufficiently powerful quantum computers.

The research team noted that Lightning's independent communication and payment systems present distinct cryptographic risks separate from Bitcoin's mainnet, meaning the second-layer network would require its own quantum-resistant upgrades even if the base protocol is upgraded.

The team said their work demonstrates that Lightning's off-chain systems can begin preparing for the quantum era independently while others focus on mainnet solutions.
