Retail Crypto Ownership Spans Multiple Generations, Survey Finds

Cryptocurrency ownership has become a mainstream asset class across multiple age groups in the United States, according to recent survey data. The findings challenge the prevailing assumption that digital assets are primarily held by younger investors.

The 2026 Crypto Ownership Study found that 42% of US adults currently own cryptocurrency. When broken down by generation, Gen X leads adoption at 42%, followed closely by Gen Z at 41%, while Baby Boomers represent 37% of owners. A significant gender gap persists, however, with men holding digital assets at a rate of 53% compared to women at 33%.

Bitcoin Dominance Persists

Despite the existence of over 18,000 active cryptocurrencies, retail investors demonstrate conservative holding patterns. Bitcoin is held by 23% of users, substantially more than Ethereum at 14%. Alternative cryptocurrencies, including Solana at 5% and Dogecoin at 7%, account for smaller portions of retail holdings. Notably, 35% of cryptocurrency owners hold only a single digital asset.

Portfolio Sizes Remain Modest

The majority of retail cryptocurrency portfolios are relatively small. Data shows 28% of users hold between $100 and $999, while another 25% hold between $1,000 and $4,999. Only 13% of surveyed users have portfolios exceeding $10,000.

Investment and wealth growth are the primary motivations, cited by 50% of respondents. Only 6% mentioned practical use cases such as payments or transfers, indicating retail investors view cryptocurrency primarily as a speculative asset rather than a currency.

Volatility Remains Top Concern

Price volatility is the leading concern for 26% of respondents, substantially outpacing fears about scams (18%) or regulatory uncertainty (11%). Despite these concerns, sentiment tilts positive among current users, with 42% expressing optimism about cryptocurrency's long-term future. Looking ahead, 37% of current users plan to increase holdings over the next 24 months, while 29% intend to maintain current levels. Only 3% plan to exit the market.
