Ripple CEO Brad Garlinghouse has explained the core factors driving XRP's value, pointing to supply and demand as the fundamental forces that determine price across digital assets.
Speaking at the Faena Forum, Garlinghouse discussed cryptocurrency's role in global finance, including cross-border payments and financial infrastructure. When asked about XRP's value and its relationship to ledger activity, he framed the answer in economic terms.
Supply and Demand Framework
Garlinghouse stated that price determination for digital assets follows a straightforward principle: "For all digital assets, price is very simple: supply and demand." He noted that XRP operates with a fixed supply, making the demand side the primary variable affecting valuation.
He also referenced a 2023 ruling by U.S. District Judge Analisa Torres in Ripple's case against the SEC regarding XRP's regulatory classification.
Three Strategic Pillars
Ripple's approach to supporting XRP centers on three elements: trust, utility, and liquidity. Garlinghouse emphasized that liquidity—the ease with which an asset can be bought and sold—is particularly important for institutional adoption.
"If I'm getting more institutions driving more transactions, and it's more useful, people are going to want to hold it," Garlinghouse said. He explained that assets difficult to convert quickly become less attractive, particularly during periods of financial stress.
Ecosystem Investment and Network Growth
Garlinghouse highlighted Ripple's investment strategy, noting the company has invested more than $1 billion in XRP ecosystem companies. According to his analysis, institutional adoption of payments and other use cases drives network activity and increases demand for the token, rather than the reverse.
