Ripple announced on October 15 that institutions can now trade swaps referencing more than 100 traditional financial markets continuously through Ripple Prime, which serves as the principal counterparty. The swaps cover stocks, equity indices, ETFs, metals, energy, and foreign exchange, referencing perpetual contracts listed on Trade.xyz on Hyperliquid.
Product Structure and Collateral
Ripple Prime offers consolidated margining across supported asset classes and accepts RLUSD as eligible collateral, subject to jurisdiction. The product operates through Ripple Prime's British Virgin Islands entity, with expansion to other regions planned. This builds on Ripple Prime's February integration with Hyperliquid and total-return swaps on equities, indices, and digital assets announced in August.
According to 0xArchive data, Trade.xyz handled $59.4 billion in perpetual volume during September, representing 23.9% of Hyperliquid's total volume across 110 listed markets.
Pricing During Market Closures
Trade.xyz's oracle references conventional prices during external trading sessions and switches to internal pricing from its own order book when traditional exchanges are closed. The oracle adjusts toward that book over 30 minutes. For Tesla, for example, the specification lists a plus or minus 5% discovery bound with two resets in each direction, with external pricing running from Sunday evening to Friday evening Eastern time.
An 0xArchive study of 614 market-weekends found the final weekend price closer to the reopening price than the Friday close in 70.7% of observations, with median absolute error falling from 113.3 to 53.4 basis points.
Cross-Margining and Risk Factors
Pooled margin can reduce collateral requirements when positions offset. In a hypothetical $100 million portfolio of $60 million equity swaps at 12% margin and $40 million energy swaps at 15%, an assumed 25% offset could reduce collateral requirements from $13.2 million to $9.9 million.
Standard Custody & Trust Company, a New York-regulated trust company, issues RLUSD. Ripple's October 8 dashboard reports $2.6 billion in reserves against over $2.4 billion in circulation, representing 105.8% coverage on issuer-reported balances.
Ripple's general risk disclosures cover collateral calls, basis risk, liquidity constraints, counterparty and insolvency exposure, operational failures, and stablecoin depegging. The Bank for International Settlements identified leverage, concentration, interconnectedness, and rapid collateral calls as sources of vulnerability in markets with extended trading hours.
Regulatory Development
The CFTC issued guidance on 24/7 trading in May, and the SEC and CFTC requested comment in June on portfolio-margin harmonization across securities, futures, and swaps.
