Ripple Expands Korean Operations Into Securities and Asset Tokenization

Ripple's presence in South Korea has broadened beyond cross-border payments into securities services and asset tokenization, with the blockchain infrastructure provider announcing a partnership with Meritz Securities on Oct. 14. The agreement marks Ripple's fourth Korean institutional partnership this year and its first with a brokerage firm.

The partnership positions Meritz alongside three other Korean financial institutions that Ripple engaged with in 2024: life insurer Kyobo Life Insurance, internet-only bank Kbank, and regional lender Jeonbuk Bank. Each partnership addresses different financial operations within the broader ecosystem.

Expanding Service Lines Across Finance

Ripple Custody and tokenization tools form the foundation of the Meritz agreement, providing secure storage, transfer, and settlement of financial assets on blockchain networks. Byungha Kang, managing director of the Strategic Planning Unit at Meritz Securities, stated that the partnership would combine Ripple's digital asset infrastructure with Meritz's capital markets capabilities as Korea's regulatory framework evolves.

Jeonbuk Bank deployed Ripple Payments for cross-border remittances in August, becoming Korea's first regional bank to adopt the platform. The system settles business transfers in seconds to minutes around the clock for import-export companies, technology startups, and online content creators.

Kyobo Life Insurance is exploring blockchain-based processing of government bonds using Ripple Custody, examining the technical and regulatory feasibility of holding, transferring, and settling tokenized government debt. Kbank is deploying institutional digital asset wallets to manage cryptocurrency holdings within a regulated banking environment.

Preparing for Digital Asset Finance

Meritz's roadmap includes spot exchange-traded funds, fractional investments, security tokens, trading platforms, and won-denominated stablecoins. The companies plan to begin operations within existing securities regulations, then expand as Korea's framework develops.

South Korea's Financial Services Commission proposed rules on Oct. 1 for tokenized securities issuance and circulation, covering stocks, bonds, funds, and fractional investment securities. The proposals would implement changes under revised securities and electronic registration laws scheduled to take effect Feb. 4, 2027, with public comments open through Nov. 11.
