Ripple Patches Critical XRP Bug That Could Have Created Unauthorized Tokens

Ripple addressed a critical vulnerability in the XRP Ledger that threatened the blockchain's fixed token supply. The bug, discovered through the network's bug bounty program and security firm Veria AI's detection system, could have permitted the creation of XRP beyond its 100 billion token limit established at the network's inception.

The flaw existed in the payments engine, where a calculation error in specially constructed trading offers could have allowed sellers to receive more XRP than buyers paid. An arithmetic overflow in the system would return an incorrectly small total, enabling unauthorized token creation. Ripple released the fix in xrpld 3.4.1 on September 25, with investigators finding no evidence the vulnerability was exploited on the public network.

Strengthening Security Infrastructure

J. Ayo Akinyele, senior director of engineering at RippleX, Ripple's blockchain development division, announced the response on October 10. The company is expanding its security approach to identify weaknesses more rapidly, emphasizing the role of artificial intelligence in vulnerability discovery.

Ripple's enhanced security measures include stronger bug bounty programs, AI-assisted code searches, and adversarial testing that simulates attacks to expose defects. An internal red team conducts controlled attacks to support this work, while the company conducts proactive code scanning and reviews earlier in development.

Formal Verification and Deeper Analysis

Beyond addressing individual bugs, Ripple is accelerating mathematical checks through collaboration with Common Prefix, a blockchain research company, and the XRPL Foundation. This work applies formal verification to evaluate whether XRP Ledger software behavior follows defined rules, potentially uncovering deeper issues that other testing methods might miss.

The verification effort will build on existing work examining the Lending Protocol and Single Asset Vault, designed to handle loans and asset pooling on the ledger. Ripple stated its goal is to systematically address underlying risks and make the XRPL harder to exploit through continued investment with the community.
