Ripple will unlock 1 billion XRP on September 1 as part of its long-running escrow program on the XRP Ledger. The scheduled release comes as XRP has recently traded at $1.43, up from $1 at the time of the previous unlock.
Escrow Program Details
Ripple established the escrow system in late 2017 by placing 55 billion XRP into time-based contracts. Under the arrangement, up to 1 billion XRP becomes available for release at the beginning of each month. Historically, however, Ripple returns between 600 million and 800 million XRP to new escrow contracts immediately after the unlock, meaning only approximately 200 million to 400 million XRP actually enter circulation monthly.
At the current price of $1.43, this net monthly addition would represent approximately $286 million to $572 million in value. While escrow unlocks can create short-term volatility, XRP typically stabilizes quickly, with unlocks rarely affecting price significantly over the long term.
Potential Regulatory Changes
A new SEC filing indicates that Ripple could potentially release additional XRP from escrow if U.S. lawmakers pass the CLARITY Act. Such a move would allow more XRP to enter circulation than the company's typical monthly release, increasing available supply. The filing may reflect Ripple's expectation that demand for XRP could increase as the U.S. establishes clearer regulatory frameworks for digital assets.
