Asset manager Grayscale's crypto research team contends that rising U.S. government debt is spurring investor interest in bitcoin and other digital assets as alternatives to traditional currency.
In a recent note, Zach Pandl, Grayscale's head of research, wrote that government debt growth undermines fiat currency credibility and prompts investors to seek alternative stores of value. Grayscale identifies bitcoin, ethereum, and zcash as assets that may benefit from this trend, known as the debasement trade—when investors purchase assets to hedge against currency depreciation.
U.S. public debt has exceeded $40 trillion for the first time, according to Treasury announcements last week. The Treasury has doubled the size of its liquidity-support buyback operations to address rising borrowing costs, but structural deficits remain unresolved.
Grayscale's research notes that the Treasury is treating the symptoms of rising bond yields rather than addressing the underlying cause of structural deficits. As debt and interest payments grow, the government faces limited options: raising taxes, cutting spending, or issuing additional debt.
Market participants expect currency supply expansion as the most politically feasible path, which would weaken the dollar while potentially benefiting scarce assets. Following the Treasury's recent announcements, the dollar experienced its weakest week of August and traded at a three-month low.
Bitcoin saw increased activity following the Treasury's announcement, though broader digital asset momentum has fluctuated since October when trader attention shifted toward artificial intelligence-related stocks.
