Author and financial commentator Robert Kiyosaki recently warned his followers on social media that the US Treasury is effectively printing more fiat currency through an expanded buyback program for longer-dated Treasury securities.
The US Treasury announced plans to raise the maximum size of its buyback operations from $2 billion to at least $4 billion per auction for 10- to 30-year bonds, effective September 9. The decision followed a sharp rise in long-term yields, which included the 30-year bond briefly reaching levels not seen in nearly two decades.
While officials and market observers described the larger buybacks as a liquidity measure or a limited, operation-twist-style adjustment aimed at easing pressure on long-term yields—noting that only the Federal Reserve can formally expand the monetary base—Kiyosaki characterized the move as quantitative easing in disguise.
Following the announcement, the Dollar Index weakened toward three-month lows. Kiyosaki argued that this drop signals rising inflation, warning that savers holding cash and traditional paper assets will suffer as a result.
In response to currency debasement concerns, Kiyosaki reiterated his long-standing preference for hard assets, stating that educated investors accumulate wealth by holding gold, silver, Bitcoin, and select real estate. Other commentators, including Peter Schiff, also pointed to market moves in gold, silver, oil, and Bitcoin as evidence that investors are actively seeking hedges amid growing fiscal concerns and a US national debt that has surpassed $40 trillion.
