Robert Kiyosaki Says Financial Setbacks Taught Him Valuable Lessons

Robert Kiyosaki, author of Rich Dad Poor Dad, said in an October 16 post on X that losing everything became a positive turning point in his life because he learned from the experience.

Kiyosaki wrote that he has gone through significant financial reversals "several times" and benefited by treating his mistakes as lessons rather than becoming bitter. He credited his "rich dad" with teaching him this approach and said the goal was to become more financially intelligent after each setback.

Six Money Problems Identified

Kiyosaki outlined what he described as six money problems that affect people at different financial stages. He listed the first five as: having no money, earning too little, spending more than you earn, lacking funds for the future, and having too much money.

"I have had all five problems," Kiyosaki said, explaining that solving the first four eventually led to the fifth.

He identified a sixth problem: transitioning from sudden riches to having nothing. Kiyosaki tied this to inflated egos or dishonest people gaining access to someone's money. He cited professional athletes, movie stars, lottery winners, and inheritance recipients as examples, naming managers, accountants, attorneys, and relatives as potential sources of financial mismanagement.

Education and Learning from Mistakes

Kiyosaki criticized the education system, saying it punishes mistakes instead of teaching people to study them. He argued that fear of errors or failure to learn from past decisions can contribute to poverty. "Humans were designed to make mistakes, learn, and grow smarter," he wrote.

Asset Preferences and Economic Views

Kiyosaki continues to favor gold, silver, and bitcoin over government-issued currency. He has said these assets protect against a weaker currency and financial instability, pointing to heavy debt and loose monetary policy as reasons for concern.

In March, Kiyosaki predicted bitcoin could reach $750,000 one year after a global financial crash he expects. He has also warned that sharp drops in stocks and bonds could leave some baby boomers without sufficient time to rebuild retirement savings.

Teaching Financial Literacy

Kiyosaki noted that he and Kim Kiyosaki created the Cashflow board game to help people practice money decisions with play money. Players buy assets, review investment deals, and track the results of their choices.
