Robinhood has allocated $25 million in bitcoin to its corporate balance sheet, according to a disclosure on October 7. Johann Kerbrat, senior vice president and general manager of crypto and international at Robinhood Markets Inc., described the decision as a diversification measure for the company's overall assets.
Kerbrat stated on X: "I'm excited to share we're adding $25 million of bitcoin to our balance sheet. We believe firmly in the future of crypto and view this as a strategic move for our overall asset diversification." Blockchain analytics platform Arkham characterized the transaction as Robinhood's first corporate bitcoin purchase.
Scale of the Investment
The $25 million allocation represents approximately 0.46% of Robinhood's $5.4 billion in cash and cash equivalents as of June 30. The company's second-quarter cryptocurrency trading revenue totaled $100 million, down 38% from the prior year.
By holding bitcoin directly, Robinhood exposes part of its corporate assets to price fluctuations. Bitcoin operates on a decentralized network that processes transactions without a central administrator.
Expanding Cryptocurrency Operations
The bitcoin purchase follows several developments in Robinhood's crypto expansion. The company completed a $200 million acquisition of crypto exchange Bitstamp on June 2, 2025, adding institutional capabilities and international reach.
Robinhood launched its own blockchain, Robinhood Chain, and stock tokens on July 1. The stock tokens provide economic exposure to underlying securities, subject to eligibility restrictions, without granting ownership rights in the referenced shares.
More recently, the company announced new automated trading tools and U.S. crypto perpetual futures at a September 29 product event. Perpetual futures are contracts that track an asset's price without a fixed expiration date. U.S. perpetual futures contracts, offered by Robinhood Derivatives in partnership with Bitstamp, provide leverage of up to 10 times for bitcoin and ethereum.
