Robinhood Chain Experiences Block Production Halt Amid Rapid Growth and Stock Token Dispute

Robinhood Chain, an Ethereum layer-2 network, experienced a significant disruption on September 4 when it halted block production for at least 14 minutes, stalling transactions before activity resumed. The cause of the interruption was not publicly disclosed by Robinhood at the time.

The outage occurred approximately two months after the network's public mainnet launch, arriving at a critical moment for the rapidly growing blockchain. Robinhood Chain has emerged as one of crypto's highest-earning networks, generating approximately $23 million in cumulative fees, with roughly $4 million generated in a recent 24-hour period, according to data cited in reports. Token Terminal estimated that Robinhood Chain accounted for 78.5% of layer-2 blockchain revenue over the past 30 days.

At its recent pace, the network's revenue would annualize to roughly $1.7 billion, though this figure represents an extrapolation of elevated short-term activity rather than a formal forecast. The network's total value locked climbed nearly 27% over one week to approximately $840 million, while decentralized exchange activity accelerated as users moved assets and trades onto the platform.

Stock Token Business Draws Corporate Objections

Robinhood's expansion into Stock Tokens—ERC-20 instruments providing economic exposure to US shares and exchange-traded funds—has attracted corporate resistance. AMC Entertainment CEO Adam Aron publicly challenged Robinhood this week after discovering a token tracking AMC shares on the platform, stating that the tokens are not registered under US securities laws and calling the practice "contemptible, outrageous, disgusting, detestable, inexcusable, vile."

Aron requested that Robinhood cease trading the AMC token and stated that AMC would consult securities counsel about potential legal action. Robinhood's chief legal officer Dan Gallagher responded that the company would not stop trading the AMC token, stating the company understands US securities laws.

OpenAI previously raised similar objections when Robinhood introduced tokens referencing the privately held company, stating it had not partnered with Robinhood and did not endorse the offering.

Stock Tokens are structured as debt securities issued by Robinhood Assets Limited, providing token holders economic exposure to referenced securities without legal or beneficial ownership of the underlying shares. The tokens are not registered under US securities laws and cannot be offered or sold to US persons, allowing Robinhood to create instruments linked to share prices without company participation.

Rapid Adoption Despite Corporate Resistance

Corporate objections have not slowed demand for Stock Tokens. Robinhood has become the largest Stock Token issuer by holder count in approximately two months, reaching about 862,800 holders, narrowly ahead of Binance's 827,200 holders. The broader tokenized-stock market has expanded more than eightfold over the past six months to roughly 2.6 million holders.

Tokenized stocks generated approximately $6.4 billion in decentralized exchange volume over the past 30 days, up more than 90% from the preceding period, with PancakeSwap accounting for about $3.1 billion and Uniswap another $2.5 billion.

Stock Tokens now represent more than $200 million of active real-world assets on Robinhood Chain, while stablecoins on the network have approached $1 billion. The outage highlighted the infrastructure demands Robinhood Chain faces as it scales to support increasing financial activity and assets migrating onto the network.
