Robinhood's crypto trading volume rose 61% in August to $17.5 billion in notional value, according to operating data released Thursday. The rebound followed a slower July, when volume reached $10.9 billion. Despite the monthly surge, August's total remained 38% below the $28.1 billion processed in August of the previous year.
The Robinhood app handled $7.4 billion of August's volume, up 72% from July but down 46% year-over-year. Bitstamp, the exchange Robinhood acquired in 2025, contributed $10.1 billion, up 53% month-over-month. Combined, the two platforms averaged $565 million daily in trading.
Broader platform metrics showed stronger growth. Total platform assets reached $384 billion, up 26% year-over-year, while funded customers—those completing at least one transaction in the prior 45 days—grew to 28.6 million. Margin loans climbed to $21.5 billion, up 72% year-over-year.
Prediction Markets Drive Growth
Event contracts, Robinhood's prediction market products, traded 4.7 billion times in August, down 23% from July but up approximately 15-fold from 300 million contracts in August of the previous year. Each contract functions as a simple yes-or-no wager, with buyers purchasing "yes" positions for a few cents and receiving $1 if correct or nothing if incorrect.
Prediction markets have become Robinhood's primary growth driver. The company's record July quarter showed event contract revenue surging more than tenfold year-over-year to $156 million, surpassing crypto as a source of transaction income. Robinhood operates these products through partner exchanges Kalshi and ForecastEx, along with its own joint venture Rothera, which processed more than 3.5 billion contracts since launching in June.
The explosive growth has drawn Congressional attention. Lawmakers have introduced more than 10 bills since January targeting prediction markets, including the PREDICT Act, which would prohibit members of Congress, the president, and senior officials from trading contracts tied to political events.
Blockchain Expansion
Robinhood Chain, the company's Ethereum layer 2 network, logged $1.6 billion in daily trading volume on decentralized exchanges as of September 1, representing 61% growth in just four days.
Despite the growth metrics, Robinhood shares fell 0.83% on Thursday following the data release. The company's next quarterly earnings report is expected November 4.
